Key Points

  • Yellow warning issued for 8 districts including Koraput, Balasore, and Bhadrak.
  • Thunderstorms with gusty winds expected in Jajpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj on Feb 24.
  • Low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal likely to intensify rainfall activity.

Bhubaneswar, Feb 23: Odisha is bracing for widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for eight districts starting Monday.

The districts under alert include Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious as lightning strikes and heavy showers are expected to intensify.

According to the IMD, the weather system is being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to move in a west-northwest direction, becoming more active in the coming days. As a result, Odisha is expected to witness light to moderate rainfall across several regions, with thunderstorms and gusty winds adding to the impact.

On February 24, the forecast indicates thunderstorm activity with lightning and wind speeds ranging between 30 to 40 km/h in Jajpur, Cuttack, and Mayurbhanj districts. Authorities have urged people to avoid open fields and take necessary precautions during lightning activity. Farmers have also been advised to protect their crops and livestock from sudden weather changes.

The IMD has highlighted that the evolving low-pressure system could bring more widespread rainfall in the coming week, potentially affecting normal life and agricultural activities.

While the rainfall may provide relief from rising temperatures, the accompanying thunderstorms pose risks to both rural and urban populations. The state government has instructed local administrations to remain on alert and ensure timely dissemination of weather updates to the public.

As the system strengthens, Odisha’s coastal and interior districts are expected to experience fluctuating weather patterns. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to stay updated and follow safety advisories.
