Flood Fury / Narrow Escape for Boat Passengers as Flood Situations Spark Panic in Bhadrak

Bhadrak, Jul 27: Bhadrak district has witnessed alarming flood-related incidents in recent days, raising serious concerns about safety and preparedness.

In Chandbali block’s Panchutikri ferry ghat, a passenger boat got stuck midstream in the swollen Montei river for over an hour. Passengers onboard were trapped in fear and panic as the vessel struggled against strong currents.

Eventually, ropes were used to pull the boat to safety, averting a potential tragedy. Though no casualties were reported, the incident has sparked questions about passenger safety measures at ferry points. Local administration has initiated an inquiry into the matter.

Flood Situations

Meanwhile, in Salandi river, heavy rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system has caused a 60-foot breach, submerging hundreds of hectares of farmland. Farmers fear massive crop losses, with paddy fields and vegetable cultivation — including okra, brinjal, and sweet potato — inundated.

Continuous rainfall has forced the Hadagada dam to release nearly 1600 cusecs of water into the river, worsening flood conditions downstream.

Emergency repair work is underway with bamboo, sandbags, and temporary reinforcements, while officials have assured that a sluice gate will be constructed after the flood season to prevent future breaches.

On the other hand, Kapali river floods coupled with incessant rain have wreaked havoc in Gobindpur village under Banta block. A mud house belonging to Madhusudan Behera collapsed, leaving the family homeless. Household items including furniture and storage units were destroyed.

Indumati Behera, a family member, expressed grief over the loss, lamenting the absence of official assistance. Villagers claim that neither the local sarpanch nor government officials have visited the site, forcing the family to rely solely on community support.
