Weather Alert / IMD Warns of Heavy Rain across Odisha till August 15

Bhubaneswar, Aug 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather warnings for several districts of Odisha, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days.

An orange alert has been declared for Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts, where intense to extremely heavy showers are expected within the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, yellow warnings have been issued for 16 districts including Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Anugola, Deogarh, and Sundargarh, predicting heavy rainfall activity.

The IMD has also cautioned that the remaining 12 districts may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging between 30–40 kmph. Rainfall is expected to continue across Odisha for the next 48 hours, with isolated heavy showers likely until August 11.

In the past 24 hours, Talcher recorded the highest rainfall at 80 mm, followed by Rourkela (59 mm), Angul (51 mm), Bhadrak (47.8 mm), Sundargarh (43 mm), Titilagarh (35 mm), Jharsuguda (28.1 mm), Deogarh (26.4 mm), Bhubaneswar (18.4 mm), and Daringbadi (14 mm). By Wednesday evening, Sundargarh registered 23.8 mm and Balangir 17.3 mm.

Weather experts have indicated that monsoon activity will remain strong for the next 2–3 days. A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal near north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast around August 7, which may intensify into a low-pressure system by August 9–10.

According to meteorologists, rainfall activity will increase across Odisha from August 7–8, with southern and coastal districts likely to witness heavy to very heavy showers. The system is expected to bring widespread rainfall until August 12, after which central and western Odisha may experience intensified showers.

Unlike the previous low-pressure system that affected northern Odisha, this time southern districts are expected to bear the brunt. Rainfall could persist across the state until August 13–15, depending on the system’s movement.
