Bhubaneswar, May 19: Odisha is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring across the state and conditions expected to worsen in the coming days.
Meteorologists have warned that the mercury could climb by 3°C over the next three days, potentially crossing 45°C in interior districts.
On Tuesday afternoon, Hirakud recorded a blistering 44°C, while Bhubaneswar registered 39.6°C.
The rise in temperature is attributed to dry winds blowing in from the north, reducing moisture levels and limiting the impact of summer storms. With the Kalbaisakhi phenomenon subdued, the state is experiencing relentless heat and humidity.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for districts including Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore, warning of severe heat and discomfort until May 23.

✨Meanwhile, an orange alert has been sounded for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur, predicting thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds at speeds of 50-60 kmph.
Weather experts noted that no active weather systems are currently influencing the region. He explained that while high temperatures generate some moisture, conditions remain unfavourable for rainfall.
As a result, the state is likely to see temperatures touching 43°C in many areas, with coastal districts hovering around 40°C. Experts cautioned that the mercury could breach 45°C in the coming days.
The oppressive heat has already disrupted daily life, with residents struggling against scorching afternoons and sultry nights.
With the heatwave expected to persist, Odisha faces a
challenging week ahead.
