Bhubaneswar, Mar 5: Odisha continues to reel under intense heat as Jharsuguda touched a scorching 39.6°C in the past 24 hours, setting a new record and becoming not only the hottest district in the state but also the first heat zone in the country this season.
According to the regional meteorological department, temperatures across northern Odisha are currently 2-5 degrees above normal. The heatwave is expected to persist for the next five days, with little change in maximum temperatures.
However, there will be some relief as weather conditions are
likely to shift on March 8, bringing thunderstorms and rainfall to parts of
northern Odisha.

The Met Centre has issued alerts for several districts. On March 8, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, rainfall, and winds reaching speeds of 30-49 kmph.

Similarly, on March 9, districts including Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds. A yellow warning has been issued for these regions, urging residents to remain cautious.
The meteorological department has advised people to take necessary precautions against the rising heat and to stay alert during the forecasted thunderstorms. With temperatures already soaring and humidity levels adding to discomfort, authorities have stressed on the importance of hydration and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.
The heatwave suggests the growing intensity of summer
conditions in Odisha, with the state bracing for more extreme weather in the
coming weeks.
