Heatwave Intensifies across Odisha; Jharsuguda Records 38°C

Bhubaneswar, Mar 3: Odisha is reeling under rising temperatures as the state experiences an early surge of summer heat. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, 31 locations across the state recorded maximum temperatures above 35°C.
The heatwave, which has left residents grappling with unbearable conditions, shows no signs of abating, with forecasts indicating similar weather for the next seven days.
Currently, no major weather systems are active over the
state, and dry conditions are expected to persist. The India Meteorological
Department (IMD) has warned that both daytime and nighttime temperatures will
continue to rise through March and April, with prolonged heatwave spells
likely.

Jharsuguda registered the highest temperature at 38.0°C, while Rourkela recorded the lowest at 12.7°C. Other major cities also faced scorching conditions: Bhubaneswar at 37.5°C, Bhadrak at 37.3°C, Talcher at 37°C, Sambalpur at 36.8°C, and Hirakud at 36.6°C. In total, 11 stations reported temperatures above 36°C, while 20 stations crossed 35°C.

Despite the prevailing heat, meteorologists have predicted a brief respite between March 7 and 9, when Nor’wester (Kalbaisakhi) showers are likely to affect coastal and adjoining districts. These pre-monsoon thunderstorms could bring temporary relief, though the overall trend of rising temperatures is expected to continue.
Earlier, the Odisha Higher Education Department, in a bid to safeguard the health and well-being of students, faculty, and staff, has rolled out a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on Heat Wave Management for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the state, officials said on Monday.
According to the official statement, colleges and universities have been advised to reschedule classes, internal assessments, and examinations during morning hours wherever possible, minimizing exposure to peak heat conditions.
Outdoor academic, sports, and co-curricular activities have
been restricted during the afternoon, with instructions to conduct them only
during cooler periods of the day and under adequate safeguards.
