Bhubaneswar, Apr 28: Odisha continues to reel under extreme summer conditions with scorching daytime heat followed by evening thunderstorms, bringing both discomfort and relief.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued an orange alert for three days, warning of severe heatwave conditions coupled with Kalbaisakhi storms across multiple districts.

On Tuesday, Jharsuguda recorded a blistering 45.3°C, making it the hottest city in the state. Districts including Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Nayagarh, and Bargarh are expected to face intense heatwave conditions during the day.

Night temperatures are also likely to remain unusually warm in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Balangir, and Kalahandi.

Kalbaisakhi Storms Loom

The Met Centre has cautioned that Kalbaisakhi storms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may hit Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts. Wind speeds could reach 50-60 kmph, posing risks to life and property.

Similar warnings have been extended to Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.

The weather department has also issued yellow alerts for several districts, predicting hot and humid conditions along with thunderstorms.

The combination of heatwaves and Kalbaisakhi is expected to continue through Wednesday, with Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak under orange alert.

Odisha Coast on Alert

Meanwhile, the sea is expected to remain rough from April 28 to May 2, prompting authorities to advise fishermen against venturing into coastal waters. Wind speeds over the Bay of Bengal may reach 45-60 kmph, making fishing activities unsafe.

With no major change in daytime temperatures expected over the next week, Odisha faces a challenging mix of scorching heat and volatile weather.
