Auckland, Oct 11: A century of sporting friendship is about to be stitched into fabric as New Zealand prepares to unveil the Kotahitanga ODI Shirt for their upcoming series against India.

More than just a jersey, it is a canvas of unity, weaving Māori and Indian artistry into a single story of respect and shared heritage.

Designed through collaboration between Ben Thomason, Shiv Narandas, and Jai Pancha, the shirt carries kōwhaiwhai patterns, lotus motifs, ogee curves, and mandalas — symbols that bridge cultures and generations.

For the Blackcaps, wearing it will mean stepping onto the field not only as cricketers but as ambassadors of a bond that has grown over 100 years, now celebrated in colour, pattern, and pride.

The creative collaboration brought together artists Ben Thomason (Ngāti Raukawa ki Te Tonga), Shiv Narandas (Gujarat), and Jai Pancha (Gujarat). Thomason contributed Māori kōwhaiwhai patterns layered over haehae lines, symbolizing the connection between the living and those who have passed, while honouring the people who shaped the relationship between the two nations.

Narandas and Pancha added three Indian motifs: the lotus, India’s national flower; a repeating ogee pattern inspired by Indian architecture; and the mandala, which provides a symmetrical framework naturally aligned with Māori design systems.

NZC Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Glenn Critchley praised the outcome, saying, “We’re absolutely wrapped with the design. The artists have created a beautiful balance between a distinct Māori design and a distinct Indian design that speaks to the bond between our nations.

Sport underpins the unity between New Zealand and India and we hope this shirt will be a collector’s item treasured by New Zealand and Indian cricket fans for years to come.”

Thomason emphasized kotahitanga, meaning unity, as the guiding principle: “The brief said unity and I think the design encompasses that wholeheartedly.”

Narandas described the project as deeply personal: “This shirt feels like a journey of our life here. I hope that everyone can feel the energy that’s been put into this project and they can wear the shirt with pride.”

The India tour of New Zealand begins on October 22, with the Kotahitanga Shirt set to symbolize the enduring bond between the two cricketing nations.
