Melbourne, Oct 10: Under the blazing Chennai sun, anticipation is already building for a cricketing spectacle unlike any other. The Big Bash League, Australia’s most vibrant domestic competition, is stepping beyond its shores to launch Season 16 at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium.

For the first time, fans in India will witness the Melbourne Renegades and reigning champions Perth Scorchers clash in a blockbuster opener designed to blend the carnival spirit of the BBL with the passion of Chennai’s cricket faithful.

The first release of tickets is available through the District by Zomato website in India, with additional allocations expected in the coming days. Scheduled for December 12, the clash is set to deliver a spectacle in a venue renowned for iconic cricketing moments.

Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager – Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said: “A packed stadium is what makes the BBL what it is, and we can’t wait to bring a piece of the Big Bash to Chennai, offering fans a one-of-a-kind experience with some of the biggest names in sport.

With fireworks from the bat, drama on the field and world-class entertainment, this is set to be a memorable day out for anyone wanting to experience a BBL match.”

The decision to host the opener in Chennai was finalized earlier this year after a Cricket Australia delegation attended Chennai Super Kings’ final IPL 2026 home game.

Following discussions with BCCI President Mithun Manhas, the proposal was accepted, paving the way for the first BBL fixture in India.

The Perth Scorchers, reigning champions with a record sixth title, will face the Renegades in front of what is expected to be a capacity crowd.

Dobson added: “With incredible early demand for these matches and the local cricket-loving community, it is expected that the stadium will be stretched to capacity on December 12, with a huge welcome anticipated for the visiting fans. We encourage Aussie fans to come and experience this unique BBL match in a special place – it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Australian audiences can follow the match live on Seven Network and Fox Cricket, while millions of Indian fans will watch through JioStar, ensuring global coverage of this landmark event.
