Dhaka, Jan 22: Bangladesh has decided not to travel to India to participate in the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to begin on February 7, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected its request to shift the venue of its matches, officials said on Thursday.
The decision was taken by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following a meeting between national team players and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul. According to sources, the ICC had given the BCB a 24-hour deadline on Wednesday to confirm its participation in the tournament.
The BCB said it remains willing to play in the competition but reiterated that it is unwilling to do so in India, citing security concerns. The board added that it would continue discussions with the ICC to seek an alternative resolution to the impasse.
However, adopting a firm stance after the meeting, Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul said the ICC’s refusal to relocate Bangladesh’s matches was unacceptable.
“While our cricketers have worked hard to qualify for the World Cup, the security risk regarding playing in India remains unchanged. This concern is not based on abstract analysis,” Nazrul said.
He added that Bangladesh has not entirely closed the door on participation. “We are not giving up hope yet; our team is ready. We expect the ICC to provide justice by considering our genuine security concerns and allowing us to play in Sri Lanka,” he said.
Bangladesh were scheduled to play four matches in India—three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.
Officials said the security concerns were raised following recent developments, including pacer Mustafizur Rahman being withdrawn from the Indian Premier League on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s instructions, citing unspecified “developments all around.”
