Odisha Politics / Two Years of BJP Government: Delivery, Perception and Political Challenges

Key Points
Two years of the Majhi-led BJP government in Odisha show mixed progress: welfare promises delivered, but governance, law and order, infrastructure, and ministerial gaps remain pressing challenges shaping future political fortunes.
Bhubaneswar, May 30: As the BJP government in Odisha prepares to complete two years in office on June 12, an assessment of the Mohan Charan Majhi administration presents a mixed picture of notable achievements and persistent governance challenges.
The government's biggest strength lies in fulfilling several key promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections. The reopening of all four gates of the Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri, enhancement of social security benefits for senior citizens and the launch of the Subhadra Yojana for women have helped the government establish its credibility among large sections of voters. These initiatives have reinforced the BJP's image as a government committed to honouring its electoral commitments.

However, governance remains a work in progress. Concerns continue over the activities of land, sand and stone mafias in different parts of the State. Allegations that certain anti-social elements continue to enjoy political patronage have created a perception problem for the government. Political analysts believe that decisive action against such networks will be crucial if the BJP wishes to project itself as a departure from the previous regime.
Law and order has emerged as another area attracting public attention. A number of sensational murder cases, incidents of mob violence and allegations of police excesses have generated concerns regarding public safety. Reports of custodial misconduct and harassment of citizens by police personnel have further raised questions about accountability within the law enforcement system.

✨The government also faces criticism for not filling six vacancies in the State Council of Ministers even after two years in office. With some ministers handling multiple portfolios, concerns have been raised about administrative efficiency and effective implementation of development programmes.
In the infrastructure sector, the pace of visible transformation has been slower than expected. While railway projects are progressing with support from the Union government, road connectivity and urban infrastructure improvements have not yet produced a significant impact across the State.
Politically, the BJP continues to benefit from a fragmented Opposition. The Biju Janata Dal is grappling with organisational challenges and the exit of several senior leaders, while the Congress remains unable to emerge as a credible alternative. Yet analysts caution that a weak Opposition alone cannot guarantee long-term political success.
As the Majhi government enters its third year, its future
political fortunes may depend less on welfare initiatives and more on its
ability to strengthen governance, improve law and order, accelerate
infrastructure development and address public grievances effectively. The
coming years will determine whether the BJP can consolidate its gains or face
the emergence of new political challenges in Odisha.
