Berhampur, May 19: Tension prevailed in Odisha’s Berhampur after a youth and a woman were allegedly assaulted by a group of miscreants in the middle of a busy road on Monday night.
The incident took place around 9 pm near Giri Road under the jurisdiction of Berhampur Police.
According to a source, the injured youth, identified as Umesh Rath, was standing near a momos stall at Giri Road along with his female friend when the attackers allegedly assaulted them with sticks and other weapons.
Locals rescued the duo and admitted them to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Umesh reportedly sustained fractures in his leg and injuries on several parts of his body. Family members alleged that sharp weapons were also used during the attack.
Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M visited the hospital and enquired about the condition of the injured persons. Police also reached the spot and launched an investigation.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the attack may have been triggered by previous enmity.
Notably, in December 2024, some youths had allegedly reached Umesh’s house at night and threatened his family members while brandishing pistols. CCTV footage of the incident had later gone viral, following which police had arrested a history-sheeter in connection with the case.
