An 18-year-old girl in Mayurbhanj has threatened to die by su*cide in front of Jharpokharia police station if she does not get justice over alleged online harassment and morphing of her photographs.
Baripada, May 18: A disturbing case of alleged online harassment, morphing of photographs and cyber intimidation has surfaced from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, where an 18-year-old girl has threatened to die by su*cide in front of a police station if she does not get justice.

The incident was reported from the jurisdiction of Jharpokharia Police Station in the tribal-dominated district.

According to a source, the girl had befriended a man through Instagram. After a few days of conversation, the accused allegedly began pressuring her to share her mobile number and repeatedly forced her to attend video calls.

When the girl refused, the accused allegedly edited her Instagram photographs into obscene images and started circulating them online using nearly 45 fake social media accounts.

The victim and her family lodged a written complaint at Jharpokharia Police Station on April 11. However, despite more than a month having passed since the FIR was registered, the accused is allegedly still circulating explicit content and threatening to kill the girl.

The incident has reportedly pushed the victim and her family into severe mental distress. Family members alleged that the girl has stopped focusing on her studies and is struggling to move freely in public due to fear and humiliation.

The victim’s uncle alleged that the family was initially asked to approach the cyber police station after filing a complaint on April 4, but no case was registered there.

“On April 11, we went to meet the Mayurbhanj SP. Though we could not meet him, the Additional SP assured us of action and directed us to lodge an FIR at the local police station. Even after one month of filing the FIR, the accused is still uploading explicit content related to my niece on various social media platforms,” he alleged.

The family further claimed that they were repeatedly made to wait for hours at the police station and only received assurances without concrete action.

The victim has now warned that if she fails to get justice and protection, she will end her life in front of the police station.

Meanwhile, the investigating officer, who is also the Inspector-In-Charge of the police station, reportedly declined to comment on the matter.
