Balasore, Sep 21: A youth was reportedly assaulted by residents of Malichua village, located under the jurisdiction of Soro police in Balasore district, following allegations of practicing witchcraft.

According to reports, the villagers suspected the youth of causing harm to several children and adults in the area through alleged sorcery.

Fueled by fear and anger, they forcibly restrained him and confined him inside a house.

The incident came to light when police attempted to intervene, but were initially blocked by the villagers who resisted their entry.

However, the Inspector-in-Charge of Soro Police Station managed to pacify the crowd and rescued the youth, who was found in critical condition. He was immediately admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police have launched an investigation and are working to identify those involved in the unlawful confinement and assault.
