Puri, Nov 20: A shocking incident unfolded in Puri’s Matia Pada area when a woman was caught attempting to cheat a shopkeeper with counterfeit currency.

 

The woman allegedly used fake notes of ₹500, ₹200, and ₹100 denominations to purchase goods, raising alarm among local residents.

 

The incident came to light when the woman bought ice cream worth ₹40 from a shop owned by Arun Kumar Sahoo. She handed over a ₹200 note and received ₹160 in change. However, suspicion arose when the shopkeeper noticed irregularities in the note. On closer inspection, he realized it was counterfeit.

Local residents quickly intervened and detained the woman before handing her over to the police. Upon searching her bag, police reportedly found a large stash of fake notes in multiple denominations. Witnesses described the scene as startling, with counterfeit notes being pulled out one after another.

During questioning, the accused claimed the money was intended for her four children, attempting to justify her actions. However, locals alleged that she had been repeatedly engaging in similar fraudulent activities in the area, cheating shopkeepers with fake currency.

 

Police have launched an investigation into the matter, focusing on how she obtained the counterfeit notes and whether she is linked to a larger racket. Authorities are also verifying if she has prior records of similar offenses.

 

The incident has sparked concern among traders and residents in Puri, highlighting the growing menace of counterfeit currency circulation. Shopkeepers have been urged to remain vigilant and carefully check notes during transactions to avoid falling victim to such scams.
