Voting For Nuapada Assembly By-Election Concludes Peacefully

Nuapada, Nov 11: The much-anticipated Nuapada Assembly by-election concluded peacefully on Tuesday, sealing the fate of 14 candidates in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). According to the State Chief Electoral Officer, the constituency recorded a remarkable voter turnout of 75.37% by 5 p.m., reflecting strong enthusiasm among the electorate.

Enthusiastic Participation
Polling began at 6 a.m. and continued until 5 p.m., with all voters present inside booth premises allowed to cast their votes. Across 358 polling stations, voters turned out in large numbers, underscoring the importance of this by-election in shaping Odisha’s political landscape.

Security and EVM Storage
After polling concluded, all EVMs were transported to the strong room under tight security arrangements. Officials confirmed that the machines are being safeguarded with 24-hour surveillance, including CCTV monitoring and layered security deployment.

Minor Complaints, One Suspension
While the voting process was largely smooth, minor complaints were reported from a few booths. At Booth No. 46, Presiding Officer Sandeep Swain was suspended by the District Election Officer for violating voter privacy. In Booth No. 11, women were allegedly found sitting outside with party symbols, and their materials were seized. Another complaint at Booth No. 250 alleged vote mismatch between symbols, which was later dismissed as a rumor after investigation.

Political Significance
This by-election, the first after the 2024 Assembly polls, carries significant weight for Odisha’s three major political parties. With 14 candidates in the fray, the outcome will be revealed on November 14 when counting takes place. The result is expected to have a considerable impact on the state’s political equations.

Chief Electoral Officer R.S. Gopalan praised the orderly conduct of polling and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to free and fair elections.

Nuapada Bypoll
Notably, the November 11 Nuapada bypoll was necessitated by the demise of former BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia. A total of 14 candidates are contesting the bypoll, including BJP’s Jay Dholakia, BJD nominee Snehangini Chhuria, and Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi.

The Counting of votes will take place on November 14.
