Odisha handicrafts / UTKALIKA Distributes Advanced Tool Kits to Rural Artisans

Khordha, Sept 7: In a bid to empower Odisha’s rural artisans and strengthen the state’s rich handicraft traditions, UTKALIKA — the Odisha State Cooperative Handicrafts Corporation Limited — has launched an advanced tool distribution programme in Khordha district. The initiative is designed to enhance productivity, improve quality, and connect traditional crafts with modern markets, officials said on Monday.

Modern Tools for Skilled Hands

At a ceremony held in Bhakarsahi under Banamalipur, 150 Appliqué craft artisans were provided with advanced tool kits. Appliqué, popularly known as Chandua work, is one of Odisha’s most distinctive handicraft traditions and has earned Geographical Indication (GI) recognition. Officials highlighted that modern tools will help artisans preserve authenticity while meeting contemporary market demands.

Approval has been granted by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, for the distribution of 1,200 advanced tool kits across seven handicraft sectors — Appliqué, Wood, Stone, Horn, Iron, Terracotta, and Brass Metal crafts — in 12 districts during 2024–25 and 2025–26.

Boosting Livelihoods

The supply of advanced kits is expected to improve efficiency, precision, and quality, enabling artisans to produce more in less time. This will not only increase income but also expand market opportunities for Odisha’s handicrafts.

Minister’s Remarks

“Skilled hands are the strength of handicrafts; modern tools will provide new success to that strength,” said Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Minister Pradeepp Bal Samanta.

The event was attended by UTKALIKA Chairperson Debasmita Sahu, Vice-Chairperson Prashant Kumar Mahapatra, Managing Director Chinmayee Biswal, and senior officials from the Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department, along with representatives from the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India.

Preserving Heritage

UTKALIKA, established in 1959, has played a pivotal role in supporting artisans through market facilities, raw material supply, and linkages. This initiative underscores its commitment to preserving Odisha’s rich handicraft heritage while adapting to modern challenges. The remaining tool kits will be distributed in phases during the current financial year.
