New Delhi, May 21: During his recent visit to Oslo, Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed Odisha’s centuries-old artistry on the global stage by presenting two exquisite handicraft gifts to Norway’s royal family. The gesture not only celebrated India’s rich cultural heritage but also underscored the role of indigenous crafts in strengthening international ties.

Modi gifted King Harald V a stunning silver sailboat model crafted in Cuttack, renowned for its Tarakasi silver filigree tradition. This intricate art form, unique to Odisha, involves weaving delicate silver wires into elaborate designs. The sailboat symbolised Odisha’s maritime legacy, recalling its historical connections to overseas trade and craftsmanship. The gift was a tribute to the artisans of Cuttack, who have preserved this delicate craft for generations.

To Queen Sonja, Modi presented a palm leaf Pattachitra, a traditional engraving art that narrates stories through intricate detailing on dried palm leaves. Pattachitra, one of Odisha’s oldest art forms, is celebrated for its storytelling tradition, often depicting mythological tales and folklore. The gift reflected the dedication and skill of Odisha’s artisans, who continue to uphold this heritage despite modern challenges.

Both gifts carried profound cultural significance. The silver sailboat highlighted Odisha’s maritime history and craftsmanship, while the palm leaf Pattachitra showcased the region’s narrative artistry.
