New Delhi, Jun 3: The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the construction of a new coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradip in Odisha. The project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) in two packages, covering a total length of 160.18 km with a capital cost of Rs8,300.79 crore.

Project Details

The highway will pass through Khordha, Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur districts, enhancing connectivity across the region. Package1 will feature a 4lane stretch from Rameshwar to Konark, while Package2 will include a 2lane road with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradip. Designed for speeds up to 100 km/h, the project aims to improve travel efficiency and reduce congestion.

The new highway will significantly cut travel time between Rameshwar and Paradip by approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is expected to provide safe, fast, and uninterrupted connectivity for both passenger and freight traffic. The project will also reduce fuel consumption, carbon emissions, and vehicle operating costs, contributing to sustainable development.

Alignment with PM GatiShakti

In line with PM GatiShakti principles, the project will connect nine economic nodes and five logistic nodes, boosting regional mobility and strengthening India’s Logistic Performance Index (LPI). The improved infrastructure is expected to promote socioeconomic growth and enhance trade opportunities in Odisha.
