Bhubaneswar, June 15: At least two people died and six others were critically injured in a major road accident near Press Chhak, New Government Colony, here in Odisha on Monday evening.

The identity of the deceased was not known until the report was filed.

According to eyewitnesses, a speeding mini SUV lost control and rammed into an auto-rickshaw and several motorcycles as people were gathered nearby for tea. The impact destroyed one auto-rickshaw and four motorcycles, leaving the scene in chaos.

The injured were rescued and immediately shifted to Capital Hospital here for treatment. The SUV driver fled the spot after the accident, and locals suspect he may have been under the influence of alcohol.

After getting information, Maitri Vihar Police reached the site soon after the incident and began an investigation. Police were examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to trace the absconding driver. A manhunt has been launched, police said.
