Telangana Journalists Get First-Hand View of Freshwater Aquaculture Research at CIFA

Bhubaneswar, Feb 4: A media delegation from Telangana visited the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday as part of a press tour to understand research and technological advancements in freshwater aquaculture.

The delegation was welcomed by CIFA Director Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, who briefed them on the institute’s mandate, research programmes and its role in India’s freshwater aquaculture sector.

During the visit, the media representatives interacted with scientists and were informed about CIFA’s work in disease-resistant breeding programmes, genetic improvement and sustainable aquaculture technologies. They were taken on a guided field tour to observe breeding and rearing processes at the institute.

The delegation also visited the Biofloc unit, ornamental fish hatchery and air-breathing fish hatchery complex. Scientists explained hatchery management practices, water-efficient farming systems and livelihood-oriented technologies developed by the institute.

Established under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), CIFA is engaged in developing improved freshwater fish varieties, fish health management protocols and farmer-oriented technologies. The institute conducts capacity-building programmes, field demonstrations and technology transfer activities across the country.

The visit was coordinated by JK Sundaray, head of the Fish Genetics and Breeding Division, and PC Das, head of the Aquaculture Production and Environment Division.

Officials from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), including Assistant Director Mahendra Prasad Jena and Information Assistant Bikash Ranjan Dalai of PIB Bhubaneswar, accompanied the delegation.
