Koida, Oct 22: Sundargarh's Koida region has emerged as the first area in Odisha to experience the onset of winter this year.

Traditionally, Daringbadi—often hailed as the “Kashmir of Odisha”—ushers in the earliest winter chill. However, Koida has taken the lead, catching both locals and meteorologists off guard.

Residents of Koida are embracing the change, with many resuming morning walks and exercise routines despite the noticeable drop in temperature. The chill has prompted early use of winter wear, with jackets and sweaters making an appearance across the region.

This year’s winter onset has been significantly delayed due to prolonged rainfall and persistent weather systems over the Bay of Bengal. Typically, Odisha begins to feel the winter nip by late August. However, the 2025 monsoon season saw an unusual surge in low-pressure systems—16 in total, compared to the usual 12 to 14—resulting in vigorous rainfall well into October.

Now, with the southwest monsoon winds retreating southward and westward, cooler air is beginning to dominate the region. Meteorologists suggest that this delayed withdrawal may lead to a longer and more intense winter across the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that conditions are now favorable for the complete withdrawal of the monsoon from Odisha within the next few days, paving the way for a full-fledged winter season.
