Balangir, Feb 4: They were classmates in school together, used to study together, and even went to the same tuition. However, as they say, "a boon sometimes becomes a bane too." And this time, it is the smartphone that was misused by six minors to gangrape their own batchmate in Odisha's Balangir district.
In this context, Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Himanshu Kumar Lal and Balangir SP Abilash G inspected the status of the ongoing investigation and held a press briefing to narrate the sequence of events.
On December 27, 2025, seeing adult content on a smartphone, six school students of Class-9 wanted to enact it. Under the influence of viral trends, they allegedly gangraped a minor girl - a fellow classmate. They allegedly committed the heinous crime when the girl was returning from tuition classes. The boys also recorded the incident on the smartphone and later posted it online. In the viral video, the accused minor boys can be seen laughing.

According to a source, the victim's family did not take any action out of stigma and constant threats from the suspects.
However, after the video surfaced online on February 3, the victim's family approached the Balangir SP and filed an FIR at Turekela police station. Following the filing of the FIR, police acted swiftly and detained the six accused minors. IGP Lal and Balangir SP on Wednesday visited the crime scene and conducted an inquiry.
The police informed that the main mastermind behind the crime is a 17-year-old boy.
All six minors involved in the incident were interrogated. Last night, the Child Welfare Committee and District Child Protection Unit held a meeting with the Balangir SP to discuss the matter.
All the minors would be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), counselled and action will be taken against those who made the video viral, Balangir SP Abilash G informed.
