A short circuit triggered another fire at Bhubaneswar’s No.1 Market, destroying shops and goods worth lakhs. With four incidents in eight months, traders demand strict fire safety enforcement.
Bhubaneswar, Aug 23: Bhubaneswar’s bustling No.1 Market has once again been engulfed in flames, exposing the fragile state of fire safety in one of the capital’s most important commercial hubs.
The latest incident, caused by a suspected short circuit, destroyed two shops completely and partially damaged three others. Goods worth lakhs of rupees — including puja materials, pan masala, and groceries — were reduced to ashes, leaving traders devastated as their livelihoods turned to dust.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to control the blaze, but by then, the damage was already done. Charred remains and piles of ash marked the spot where once stood thriving businesses.

✨This is not an isolated event. In the past eight months alone, No.1 Market has witnessed four separate fire outbreaks. Each time, officials from the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) visited the site, reviewed the situation, and promised infrastructure improvements. Yet, little has changed on the ground.
Traders allege that despite guidelines being issued on fire safety, enforcement remains lax, and most shopkeepers fail to comply with basic safety norms. Equally troubling is the apparent lack of seriousness from the authorities in ensuring strict adherence to these rules.
The recurring fires have sparked public outrage and raised pressing questions: When will the authorities take decisive action? How long will traders continue to suffer losses due to negligence?
Citizens argue that the BMC must enforce fire safety regulations with strictness and accountability, rather than allowing incidents to fade into memory after temporary reviews.
As Bhubaneswar grows into a modern capital city, the safety
of its markets cannot be compromised. The repeated tragedies at No.1 Market
highlight the urgent need for robust fire safety infrastructure, strict
monitoring, and genuine accountability. Until then, traders and customers alike
remain vulnerable to the next inevitable blaze.
