Mayurbhanj, Apr 15: A tragic incident at Rasgobindpur Ashram School in Mayurbhanj district has shaken Odisha, following the death of a Class 5 student, Rupali Beshra, after consuming hostel food. The incident occurred when over 146 students reportedly fell ill after eating rice, potato curry, and mango chutney served at the school hostel. While most were treated at Rasgobindpur hospital, 20 critically ill students were shifted to Baripada PRM Medical College and Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Rupali succumbed to her illness, sparking outrage among locals.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹3 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for Rupali’s family. Considering the gravity of the situation, the CM has directed a high-level probe by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC). The RDC will visit Rasgobindpur, inspect the site, and submit a detailed report on the circumstances leading to the mass illness and the student’s death.
To ensure the safety of other students, a special medical team will conduct health check-ups of all hostel residents. Meanwhile, the incident triggered strong protests in the area. Villagers blocked roads, lit fires, and clashed with police, demanding accountability. The Rasgobindpur IIC sustained injuries during the unrest, prompting police to resort to lathi-charge and tear gas to control the situation. Two platoons of force have been deployed to maintain order.

Local MLA and Minister Krushnachandra Mahapatra described the incident as heartbreaking and assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
