Brahmapur, Oct 2: A railway gangman was killed after being struck by an express train while carrying out routine track maintenance work near Chhatrapur railway station in Odisha's Ganjam district on Friday, police said.

The deceased was identified as K. Gobinda Patra (58), a resident of the Khallikote area in Ganjam district. He was part of a team of railway trackmen engaged in maintenance work on the rail line between Ganjam and Chhatarpur stations when the incident occurred around 11 AM.

Fatal mishap

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Patra was hit by the Bhubaneswar-Visakhapatnam inter-state express train. Preliminary reports suggest that he may have suddenly come onto the path of the approaching train while work was in progress. He died on the spot due to the impact.

Railway personnel and a GRP team rushed to the accident site soon after receiving information. The mutilated body was recovered and sent to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur for post-mortem examination.

Investigation launched

Officials said the body was later handed over to the family members after necessary formalities. The GRP has registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the accident.

The incident has once again highlighted the occupational risks faced by railway maintenance workers, who often perform critical duties on active tracks to ensure the safe movement of trains.
