Puri, Aug. 12: Swargadwar, the famed cremation ground in Odisha's Puri, revered by Hindus for the belief that cremation here ensures moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death), is reportedly facing mounting challenges. Growing crowds and inadequate infrastructure have left the sacred site struggling to maintain its sanctity.

Waste and Pollution Concerns

Bamboo poles, ropes, mats and heaps of ash lie scattered across the cremation ground, diminishing its spiritual ambience. Despite the deployment of 22 sanitation workers and supervisors, maintaining cleanliness remains a challenge. Stray dogs frequently enter the premises, while piles of half-burnt firewood and ash further add to the disorder.

Firewood Shortage Deepens

The demand for firewood has risen sharply with the increasing number of cremations, leading to acute shortages. A traditional funeral pyre requires nearly one quintal of firewood, raising environmental concerns while putting additional pressure on already strained resources.

Crematorium Project Stalled

A proposed wood-based crematorium, designed to reduce firewood consumption to 70-80 kg per cremation, has remained stalled for more than 18 months. Technical teams are still assessing the feasibility of installing the facility. Puri Collector Dibyajyoti Parida said the project remains under review and stressed the need for its early implementation in view of the rising number of cremations.

Faith Outpaces Infrastructure

While faith continues to draw thousands of families to Swargadwar every year, infrastructure development has failed to keep pace. Several proposals approved by the governing body remain unimplemented, leaving the cremation ground grappling with deteriorating infrastructure and sanitation. The prolonged delay has raised concerns over preserving the sanctity and dignity of one of Odisha's most revered spiritual sites.
