Puri, Aug 31: In a disturbing incident near the revered Shree Jagannath Temple, two Yatri Gumastas (agents who guide pilgrims) allegedly assaulted a temple servitor, Ram Narayan Pujapanda, while escorting devotees into the shrine.
According to reports, the incident occurred near the temple’s Singhadwar (Lion’s Gate). The agents verbally abused Ram, demanded extortion money, and even attempted to snatch his gold chain during the altercation.
Following this, Ram lodged a formal complaint with the Singhadwar Police Station, prompting authorities to initiate an investigation.
The servitor claimed that the agents not only disrupted the sanctity of the pilgrimage but also posed a threat to temple personnel.
In recent weeks, Puri Police have arrested several individuals posing as servitors and extorting money from unsuspecting devotees. Many of these agents reportedly have no official affiliation with the temple and exploit pilgrims by offering unauthorized services.

Senior servitors and temple authorities have expressed concern over the increasing presence of imposters and aggressive agents around the temple premises. They have urged the administration to tighten security and verify the credentials of those assisting pilgrims.
