Cuttack, Mar 28: A special POCSO court in Odisha's Cuttack district on Saturday sentenced a 68-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl with disabilities.
The court in Cuttack imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict, identified as Gopinath Kundu, and directed that the victim receive Rs 3 lakh in compensation.
Special Public Prosecutor Mihir Sekhar Sahu handled the case on behalf of the victim.
The assault took place on August 7, 2025, under the jurisdiction of Kishannagar police station in Cuttack district. According to prosecutors, the accused lured the girl to an under-construction building on the pretext of giving her a chips packet and raped her.
The court delivered its verdict based on testimony from 23 witnesses and documentary evidence, the prosecutor confirmed.

The case comes as official data reveals persistent challenges in combating sexual violence across the state. A white paper released on March 25, 2026, by the Odisha Home Department recorded 229,881 cognisable offences in 2025, with crimes against women remaining a major concern.
According to the report, 2,994 rape cases were registered across the state during 2025 -- an average of more than eight cases per day.
The white paper also documented 164 cases of human trafficking and 145 dowry deaths, highlighting ongoing social challenges, the white paper read.
