Berhampur, Feb 19: The murder case of Lawyer Pitabas Panda in Berhampur has taken a new turn with the health condition of arrested corporator Malaya Bishoyi. Malaya, who was taken into custody in connection with the high-profile case, reportedly fell ill while lodged in Berhampur jail.
Authorities confirmed that he was experiencing severe chest pain along with complications from high diabetes.
Following medical advice, he was shifted from the jail to MKCG Medical College and Hospital under a strict security cordon.
Sources said that a special medical team has been assigned to monitor his condition closely.
The corporator’s health concerns have added another dimension to the ongoing investigation, which has already drawn significant public attention in Berhampur and beyond. Police officials emphasised that despite his hospitalisation, security arrangements remain stringent to prevent any untoward incident.
Pitabas Panda was shot dead on the night of October 6, coinciding with Kumar Purnima celebrations.
According to the police investigation, the senior lawyer had finished work in his chamber and was returning home on his scooter at around 10 pm. When he was barely 100 metres from his residence, two assailants, identified as Kurupati and Chintu, allegedly arrived on a motorcycle and fired at him from close range.

The shooting took place in the Baikunthanagar area near the New Bus Stand under Berhampur’s Gate Bazar limits.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after opening fire. Panda later succumbed to his injuries, triggering widespread outrage and political reactions across the region.
