Bhubaneswar, Sep 28: Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Monday spoke in the Odisha Assembly about the flood situation in the state, saying that finding a permanent solution to recurring disasters is the government's main objective.
Over 30% More Rainfall Recorded In Four Months
Pujari said Odisha has experienced an unprecedented situation, with more than 30% excess rainfall recorded over the past four months.
He said 12 low-pressure systems had formed over a period of two months, four of which intensified into depressions. More than 23 districts have suffered extensive damage, he said.
"The permanent solution to disasters is our main objective," Pujari said.

He said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited Koraput in southern Odisha on Sunday and interacted with people, including checking the quality of food being provided to them.
Pujari also said he had earlier visited Jajpur and Bhadrak districts and reviewed the flood situation on the ground.
Govt Discusses Measures With Experts
The minister said discussions had been held with experts on measures to prevent a similar situation in the event of heavy rainfall in the future.
The Chief Minister has announced a special package of Rs 1,000 crore for compensation related to damage to crops and houses, as well as vegetable and maize cultivation, he said.
Pujari said infrastructure would be strengthened after the floods. He also said the government would conduct an IIT survey to examine measures to prevent such situations in the future.

28 Hirakud Gates Open
Meanwhile, Hirakud Dam Chief Engineer Pratap Chandra Chowdhury said 28 gates of the dam were open.
As of 11 am on Monday, the reservoir's water level stood at 629.45 feet. The inflow was 6,12,077 cusecs per second, while 4,97,719 cusecs of water were being released through the 28 gates, he said.
Chowdhury said inflow into the dam reached its peak in the morning and was expected to remain at peak levels until the evening.
He said there had been no rainfall in Chhattisgarh for the past two days and the inflow into Hirakud could decline in the coming period. The dam authorities would decide whether to open more gates based on the situation, he said.
Mahanadi Water Level Rises At Mundali
Floodwater levels are rising again at Mundali. As of 11 am, the flow stood at 7,77,893 cusecs.
The upstream water level was 92.20 feet, while the downstream level stood at 89.90 feet.
