Hyperandrogenism Controversy

Dutee Chand was barred from the 2014 Commonwealth and Asian Games after being declared ineligible to compete as a female athlete due to hyperandrogenism. Though not accused of cheating or doping, the decision drew criticism from intersex advocates, prompting her to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Dutee Chand had to endure invasive tests and public scrutiny during the eligibility debate.

After the hyperandrogenism rule change, she returned to competition, setting a national record in the 60m (7.28s) and winning bronze at the 2016 Asian Indoor Championships. Later that year, she clocked 11.33s in the 100m to win gold at the Federation Cup, breaking Rachita Mistry’s 16-year-old national record.

Personal Life Struggles

Beyond athletics, she has been recognized for her courage in openly speaking about her personal life. In 2019, Dutee Chand became India’s first athlete to openly come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, revealing that she was in a same-sex relationship.

She explained that the landmark 2018 Supreme Court ruling, which decriminalized gay sex in India, gave her the confidence to speak candidly about her sexuality. Her announcement sparked widespread discussion across the country, drawing both support and criticism.
