GI Tag / Odisha’s Three Traditional Products Edge Closer to GI Tag Recognition

Key Points
Bhubaneswar, Aug 24: Three of Odisha’s traditional products are on the verge of receiving Geographical Indication (GI) tags, marking a significant step in preserving and promoting the state’s cultural and culinary heritage, officials said on Monday.
According to OUAT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabhat Kumar Raul, applications for GI recognition of Dhenkanal’s Palabaigan brinjal, Sambalpur’s Sarsatia delicacy, and Puri-Chilika’s famed Manikapatana curd have reached the final stage. Detailed documentation, including traditional preparation methods, ingredients, and historical significance, has been submitted to the authorities.
Speaking at the 65th Foundation Day of OUAT, Prof. Raul highlighted that the GI process not only safeguards authenticity but also enhances the economic prospects of local farmers and producers. “Manikapatana curd, with its unique preparation style and heritage, has been presented with comprehensive data to establish its distinct identity,” he said.

✨Efforts are also underway to secure GI recognition for
Kendujhar’s renowned Badi (sun-dried lentil cakes) and the special Phenua
biri variety of black gram used in its preparation. Produced in the
Banshapal region, this variety is known for its superior quality, which lends
the Badi its distinctive taste and texture.

Officials said that GI certification would provide these products with a unique identity, protect them from imitation, and open up wider markets. More importantly, it would benefit local cultivators and artisans economically, while showcasing Odisha’s agricultural and food heritage at national and global levels.
The move is expected to strengthen Odisha’s presence in the growing list of GI-certified products from India, which already includes Sambalpuri sarees, Rasagola, and other traditional items.
