Transport Minister Vibhuti Jena pledged to cut down on official car use and promote electric vehicles, extending subsidies till 2028, echoing PM Modi’s appeal to conserve fuel and encourage sustainable transport.
Bhubaneswar, May 13: In a significant statement following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce fuel consumption, Transport Minister Vibhuti Jena announced that he will personally cut down on the use of multiple government vehicles and encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
Speaking to reporters, Jena said that for official duties he will now travel in a single government car instead of the three vehicles previously allotted at the ministerial level. He added that whenever possible, he would opt for public transport such as buses, setting an example for citizens to follow.
The minister emphasized the importance of reducing dependency on petrol and diesel, urging the public to adopt EVs as a sustainable alternative. “Electric vehicles are the need of the hour,” Jena said, highlighting their role in cutting emissions, conserving foreign exchange, and reducing India’s reliance on imported fuel.

In line with this push, the government has extended subsidies for EV purchases until 2028, making them more affordable and accessible to the general public. Jena noted that this policy measure is designed to accelerate India’s transition towards cleaner mobility and support the country’s broader climate and energy goals.
The minister’s statement comes amid heightened global uncertainties and rising energy costs, reinforcing the government’s call for citizens to adopt energy‑saving practices. By reducing his own official car usage and promoting EVs, Jena aims to send a strong message of responsible governance and sustainable living.
Officials said the move is expected to encourage more people to consider EVs for daily use, while also strengthening India’s efforts to build a robust electric mobility ecosystem.
With subsidies extended and public awareness campaigns underway, the government hopes to see a significant rise in EV adoption across the country in the coming years.
