Giriraj Singh Travels in New EV

Key Points

Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh has set an example by buying an electric car in Patna after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to cut fuel usage amid the global supply chain crisis triggered by the US - Iran war. Singh’s symbolic gesture is being seen as a step towards sustainable mobility and national interest.
Patna, May 11: Union Textile Minister and Begusarai MP Giriraj Singh has taken a notable step towards sustainable mobility by purchasing a brand-new electric vehicle, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to citizens to reduce fuel consumption amid the ongoing US–Iran conflict.

Singh was spotted travelling in his newly acquired EV to Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, where he boarded a flight. Sharing his move on social media platform X, Singh wrote: “The confluence of environmental protection and modern progress! On the call of the Prime Minister, we used an electric vehicle (EV). This is a big step towards a bright future.”

His initiative is being widely interpreted as a symbolic gesture that could encourage his supporters and the public to adopt energy-saving practices and shift towards electric mobility. The move comes at a time when India is facing mounting pressure on its import bill due to rising crude oil prices and global supply chain disruptions.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had urged citizens to adopt restraint-driven measures reminiscent of the Covid-19 era. These included working from home, reducing petrol and diesel usage, limiting gold purchases, preferring public transport, promoting indigenous products, and avoiding foreign travel to conserve foreign exchange reserves. Modi stressed that patriotism during difficult times also means living responsibly and fulfilling duties towards the nation.

Notably, former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has already been using an electric vehicle for his local travel in Patna, switching to SUVs only for long-distance journeys. Singh’s decision adds momentum to the push for EV adoption in Bihar and beyond.

As India grapples with global uncertainties, Singh’s move underscores the growing importance of electric mobility and responsible consumption in national interest.
