Bhubaneswar, Jan 21: Odisha is set to take a major leap toward sustainable urban transport as the state government has decided to gradually phase out diesel-powered “Ama Bus” vehicles and replace them with electric buses.
The announcement was made by Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, who emphasized the government’s commitment to cleaner, greener, and safer public transport.
Mahapatra stated that all existing diesel buses will be
scrapped in a phased manner, with electric buses introduced to run across city
routes. “The government has taken a firm decision to remove diesel buses from
the roads. Soon, only EV buses will operate, reducing pollution and improving
efficiency,” he said.

In a progressive move, the minister also revealed that women will be trained and employed as bus drivers under the initiative. “This step will not only empower women but also enhance the sense of safety among female passengers,” Mahapatra added. The initiative is expected to encourage more women to join the workforce in public transport, breaking stereotypes and creating inclusive opportunities.
The government’s plan aligns with its broader vision of sustainable urban development and gender empowerment. By introducing electric buses, Odisha aims to reduce carbon emissions, cut fuel costs, and modernize its public transport system. The inclusion of women drivers is seen as a landmark decision that could inspire similar initiatives across the country.
Public response to the announcement has been largely positive, with commuters welcoming the idea of cleaner buses and safer travel. Experts believe that the move will significantly contribute to Odisha’s climate goals while also setting a precedent for other states.
Bhubaneswar is witnessing a worrying rise in air pollution,
with the Air Quality Index (AQI) frequently slipping into the poor category. With
the rollout of EV buses and women drivers, Odisha is poised to redefine urban mobility,
combining environmental responsibility with social empowerment.
