Key Points
- Diesel Ama Buses to be phased out, replaced by EVs.
- 20 women drivers to be trained in first phase.
- Special EV buses planned exclusively for women passengers.
- Initiative aims at reducing pollution and enhancing safety.
Bhubaneswar, Jan 21: In a major step towards tackling air pollution and enhancing commuter safety, the Odisha government has decided to phase out the diesel-run “Ama Bus” services gradually, replacing them with electric vehicles (EVs), officials said on Wednesday.
The decision, taken in response to rising concerns over air quality during winter season, marks a significant transition in the state’s public transport policy.
Urban Development Minister Krushnachandra Mahapatra said that diesel buses will be scrapped in phases, with EV buses introduced across city routes. “The government is committed to reducing pollution and ensuring sustainable mobility. Electric buses will not only cut emissions but also improve passenger comfort and safety,” he stated.
In a pioneering move, the government has also decided to train women drivers to operate these buses. In the first phase, 20 women holding heavy vehicle licenses will undergo specialized training. Once certified, they will independently drive Ama Buses, a step officials believe will reduce accidents and instill greater confidence among commuters.

The government has further prioritized women’s safety by planning dedicated EV buses exclusively for female passengers. These services, awaiting the Chief Minister’s approval, are expected to provide a secure commuting option, particularly during late hours. Women passengers expressed optimism, saying such measures would make them feel safer and more empowered while traveling.
Officials emphasized that the transition to EVs will also contribute to the state’s long-term environmental goals. By gradually eliminating diesel buses, the government aims to meet its target of an all-electric public transport fleet in the coming years. “This is not just about cleaner air, but also about modernizing urban transport to meet global standards,” Mahapatra added.
With the dual focus on sustainability and inclusivity, Odisha’s transport reforms are poised to set a benchmark for other states. The combination of EV adoption, women-led driving, and dedicated safety measures reflects a holistic approach to urban mobility, balancing ecological responsibility with social empowerment.
