Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has approved the construction of 2.91 lakh additional houses under the Antyodaya Gruha Yojana and extended the scheme till 2029. Incentive amounts have also been increased to encourage timely completion and expand housing coverage.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 15: In a major boost to affordable housing for economically weaker sections, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday approved the construction of an additional 2,91,666 houses under the Antyodaya Gruha Yojana and extended the scheme's tenure by two years, till 2029.

Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister said the move would accelerate the State government's efforts to achieve the goal of providing housing for all eligible beneficiaries at the earliest.

Under the revised framework, the duration of the scheme has been extended from the earlier deadline of 2027 to 2029. The total project cost will remain unchanged at Rs7,550 crore. However, funds amounting to Rs3,500 crore earmarked under the repair component of the scheme will now be redirected towards the construction of new houses.

Officials said the expansion will cover beneficiaries who had earlier received housing assistance of Rs48,500 or less, along with other eligible households identified through a fresh survey. The Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department has been directed to undertake the survey process at the earliest to identify new beneficiaries.

The State government has also revised the incentive structure to encourage timely completion of houses. Earlier, beneficiaries who completed construction within four months received an incentive of Rs20,000. Under the revised norms, beneficiaries completing construction within five months will receive Rs35,000 as an incentive.

Similarly, beneficiaries who previously received Rs10,000 for completing houses within six months will now be entitled to Rs20,000 if construction is completed within seven months.

According to the Chief Minister, the enhanced incentives are expected to encourage faster completion of housing projects and improve participation among eligible families.

The Antyodaya Gruha Yojana was launched with a target of constructing houses for five lakh families across Odisha. The scheme primarily benefits poor and vulnerable households who were not found eligible under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) but continue to require housing support.

The latest decision is expected to significantly expand the scheme's reach and strengthen the State government's commitment to ensuring dignified housing for disadvantaged sections of society.
