Key Points

  • Odisha to implement Chandigarh’s road design with service roads.
  • Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan project tender to finish by Feb 25.
  • Work expected to begin by March-end or early April.

Bhubaneswar, Feb 18: In a bid to ease traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar, Odisha government will follow acclaimed model of Chandigarh in road infrastructure, says the state’s Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.

During his recent visit to Chandigarh, Harichandan observed how the city’s main roads remain largely traffic-free due to the integration of service roads. Inspired by the design, he announced that the upcoming Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan road project will follow the same model.

“In Chandigarh, service roads run parallel to the main roads, allowing local residents to use them for short commutes and access to nearby establishments,” stated Harichandan, adding that the model reduces unnecessary entry onto the main road, ensuring smoother traffic flow.

The Odisha Works Minister stressed that this system could significantly reduce congestion in the capital city, especially along busy stretches like Jaydev Vihar to Nandankanan.

“The tender process for the project is expected to conclude by February 24-25. Authorities are optimistic that construction will begin by late March or early April,” revealed the Works Minister. “Once completed, the road will feature a main carriageway dedicated to through traffic and service roads for local movement,” he added.

This dual-road design is expected to minimize bottlenecks, improve safety, and enhance the overall commuting experience.

The Jaydev Vihar–Nandankanan corridor is one of Bhubaneswar’s busiest routes, connecting residential areas, educational institutions, and tourist destinations.

With the new design, the Odisha government hopes to replicate Chandigarh’s success and set a benchmark for future road projects in Odisha. The initiative reflects a broader vision to modernize Bhubaneswar’s infrastructure and make it more commuter-friendly.

If executed effectively, this project could become a model for other cities in Odisha, paving the way for smarter urban planning and sustainable traffic management.
