Boudh, Dec 2: Alcohol addiction proved costly for a primary school teacher in Harbhanga block of Boudh district as strict disciplinary action has been initiated against him. There have been repeated allegations against the teacher of misconduct, including arriving at school under the influence of alcohol.

The Block Education Officer (BEO), Hadibandhu Behera, confirmed that departmental proceedings have begun against Suramani Mallick, a teacher at Jharakhman Primary School.

According to reports, Mallick frequently attended school after consuming alcohol, neglected teaching duties, and spent time on his mobile phone instead of engaging with students. He allegedly arrived at school at irregular hours and remained absent without informing higher authorities. Complaints from parents and community members prompted the BEO to investigate.

Earlier, on November 27, 10 teachers in the block were served show-cause notices and had one day’s salary withheld for negligence of duty. However, Mallick’s case stood out due to the seriousness of his actions. Despite being issued a notice, he failed to respond, leading to stricter measures.

The BEO has now ordered the stoppage of one day’s salary and initiated a departmental inquiry. Mallick has been directed to submit his explanation within 30 days, as mentioned in official letter number 3114. The inquiry will determine further action based on his response and the findings of the investigation.

Hadibandhu Behera emphasized that teachers must maintain discipline, attend school on time, and focus on imparting quality education to students. He urged educators to uphold their responsibilities and contribute positively to the department’s progress.

Reports suggest that authorities have assured strict monitoring to ensure teachers fulfill their duties responsibly after parents expressed concern over the impact of such behaviour on children’s learning environment.
