Weather Alert / Odisha Set for Six Days of Heavy Rain as Cyclonic Systems Strengthen

Key Points
Odisha faces six days of heavy rainfall as multiple cyclonic circulations intensify. IMD forecasts widespread showers from August 22, peaking August 23-25.
Bhubaneswar, Aug 22: Odisha is once again under the grip of active monsoon systems, with two cyclonic circulations currently influencing weather patterns across the state.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, these systems are expected to trigger widespread rainfall for the next six days, with intensity peaking between August 23 and 25.
At present, one circulation lies over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast. Another is positioned over central Myanmar, while a third circulation persists over north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.

Additionally, a low-pressure area has formed over eastern Madhya Pradesh. Meteorologists suggest that the Myanmar and Bangladesh systems may merge to form a distinct low-pressure zone within 48 hours, likely around August 23. This development could significantly enhance rainfall activity across Odisha.

✨Weather scientists noted that while the southern Odisha–north Andhra circulation may have limited impact, the combined effect of the Myanmar and Bangladesh systems could be far more influential. As a result, rainfall is expected to intensify from the night of August 22, with heavy showers forecast particularly in northern and coastal districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bhubaneswar office has predicted light to moderate rainfall in many places today, especially in western and northern coastal regions. Districts such as Kendujhar, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, and Nabarangapur may experience heavy showers at isolated locations.
On August 23, widespread rainfall is likely, with heavy downpours in select areas. The intensity is expected to rise further on August 24 and 25, covering most districts, especially northern and western Odisha. Alerts have been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions, with warnings of waterlogging, traffic disruption, and localized flooding.
The rainfall activity is projected to continue until August 26, keeping the administration on high alert.
With Odisha already witnessing prolonged monsoon showers
over the past month, the upcoming spell is expected to add to the seasonal
rainfall tally.
