Administration / Odisha Introduces Revised English Spellings for Administrative Units

Bhubaneswar, Jul 20: The Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Department on Monday directed all District Collectors to ensure immediate implementation of revised English spellings of administrative units across the state. The directive follows the government’s notification issued on June 22, 2026, aligning spellings with Odia pronunciation, officials said.

In a letter to district collectors, Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Aravind Padhee instructed that the revised spellings be mandatorily used in all official documents, correspondence, notifications, records, websites, portals, advertisements, and nameplates. The directive aims to ensure uniformity and accuracy in administrative usage while safeguarding the state’s linguistic and cultural identity.

The government clarified that the revision pertains only to English spellings and does not involve any change in the names of Districts, Subdivisions, Tehsils, Blocks, or urban local bodies. Officials have been asked to submit compliance reports within 15 days of receiving the directive.

Further, all government offices, local institutions, and related establishments at the district level have been instructed to adopt the revised spellings without delay. Business and private institutions operating within administrative units have been given six months to update their nameplates and signage accordingly.

Padhee emphasised that the comprehensive use of revised spellings will help maintain consistency across government records and administrative functions. “This measure will protect Odisha’s linguistic and cultural identity while ensuring accuracy in official usage,” he said.

The directive marks a significant step in standardising administrative nomenclature, reinforcing the state’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while modernising governance practices.
