Key Points
Bhubaneswar, Jun 22: Odisha has officially corrected the English spellings of 64 places across 26 districts to align with authentic Odia phonetics, replacing colonial-era distortions, officials said on Monday.
According to a notification, issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Cuttack will now be spelt as Kataka and Balasore as Baleshwar. Similarly, Angul becomes Anugola, Berhampur becomes Brahmapur, Deogarh becomes Debagada, Keonjhar becomes Kendujhar, and Jeypore becomes Jayapur. The initiative is aimed at preserving Odia linguistic heritage and cultural identity.
Linguistic Authenticity
The government’s order directs that the existing English spellings of districts, sub-divisions, tahasils, blocks, and urban local bodies be standardized in conformity with Odia phonetics. The revised spellings will take effect from the date of publication in the Odisha Gazette.
No Change in Names
Officials clarified that the corrections apply only to English spellings and do not alter the actual names of the administrative units. The measure is intended to restore linguistic authenticity while ensuring consistency in official records.
