“Khairi was not just a tiger; she was a symbol of the bond between humans and nature,” the minister said.

Former forest department employees who cared for Khairi during her lifetime were honored at the event. They shared personal anecdotes and lesser‑known experiences, highlighting how Khairi’s presence had touched countless lives.

Organizers emphasized that the purpose of the celebration was not only to remember Khairi but also to inspire future generations about wildlife conservation and coexistence.

The minister also announced plans to strengthen tiger conservation in Similipal Tiger Reserve, ensuring Khairi’s legacy continues through efforts to protect and expand tiger populations. “The government is committed to reinforcing conservation in Similipal, carrying forward Khairi’s memory while safeguarding biodiversity,” he added.

Khairi’s story remains unique. In 1974, Kharia tribals found a tiger cub along the Khairi river and handed it over to Saroj Raj Choudhury, the founding director of the Similipal Tiger Project.

Named after the river, Khairi was raised lovingly by Choudhury and his wife Nihar Nalini Devi at their government residence in Jashipur. Treated like a family member, Khairi grew up in human care, astonishing the world with her affectionate nature.

Her life became a symbol of harmony between humans and wildlife, drawing national and international attention. Though Khairi is no longer alive, her memory continues to live on in Dhabadih, where her birth anniversary is celebrated every year.

The 53rd anniversary once again brought her story to life, reminding all that conservation is not just about protecting animals but about nurturing the bond between people and nature.
