Boudh, Oct 5: A dramatic man‑crocodile clash unfolded in the Mahanadi river on Monday morning at Marada ghat in Harabhanga block, where a young man fought for his life for nearly ninety minutes before being rescued.
Sudhir Behera of Marada village had gone to the river to bathe when a crocodile lurking nearby suddenly attacked, clamping its jaws onto his left leg and dragging him underwater.
In desperation, Sudhir clutched a tree branch protruding into the river and cried out for help, struggling to keep himself alive against the predator’s grip.

✨For over an hour and a half, Sudhir battled the reptile in the water, refusing to let go despite severe injuries. His cries alerted his brother, Chhabindra Behera, who rushed to the spot. Realising the gravity of the situation, Chhabindra called local resident Pramod Pradhan, and together they entered the river to fight off the crocodile.
Despite repeated attempts, the animal refused to release Sudhir. Finally, after a prolonged struggle, the rescuers managed to free him from the crocodile’s jaws.
Severely injured, Sudhir was first taken to Purunakatak hospital and later shifted to Baudh Medical College. As his condition remained critical, he was further referred to Burla hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident has drawn widespread praise for Chhabindra, who
risked his own life to save his brother from certain death.
