Odisha Red Cross dispatched 1,000 dry food packets to flood-hit Dhamnagar, with volunteers working round-the-clock to aid victims and spread health awareness amid rising risks of snakebites and waterborne diseases.

Bhadrak, Jul 30: As heavy rains continue to trigger floods across Odisha, the Odisha Red Cross has stepped forward with emergency relief for affected families.

In the first phase, 1,000 dry food packets have been dispatched to Dhamnagar in Bhadrak district, one of the worst-hit regions.

Each relief packet contains 2 kg of flattened rice (chuda), 1 kg of sattu, 250 grams of sugar, and 500 grams of biscuits. With cooking food proving difficult in flood conditions, these ready-to-eat items are expected to provide immediate sustenance to displaced families.

Around 50 volunteers have been working tirelessly to prepare, pack, and deliver the relief materials. The Red Cross has assured that subsequent consignments will be sent to other flood-affected districts, including Balasore and Jajpur, in the coming days.

“We are committed to sending more relief in phases, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most. Coordination with local administration is being maintained to identify priority areas,” said Junior Red Cross Odisha representative Laxman Swain.

Swain also urged flood victims to remain cautious about health risks. With stagnant floodwaters increasing the chances of snakebites and waterborne diseases, he advised residents to drink only boiled or purified water, avoid consuming food from open sources, and seek immediate medical help if symptoms of diarrhoea or cholera appear. Special care has been recommended for pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

The Red Cross initiative comes at a critical time, as thousands of families struggle with shortages of food, clean water, and basic supplies. Relief efforts are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with volunteers working alongside district authorities to ensure timely assistance.
