Bhubaneswar, Jan 9: In a significant step towards modernising investigation processes, the Odisha Police has announced the appointment of Crime Scene Officers (CSOs) in every police station across the state. The move is aimed at ensuring scientific handling of evidence, faster investigation, and improving conviction rates, officials said on Friday.

Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania has directed that at least two officers be designated in each station to safeguard crime scenes until forensic teams arrive. These officers will be responsible for preserving evidence, preventing contamination, and assisting in preliminary examination.

Speaking to mediapersons, former DGP Sanjeeb Marik said that the initiative would strengthen the evidentiary base of criminal trials, aligning with the Indian Justice Code’s emphasis on scientific proof.

A training camp was recently held in Bhubaneswar where 74 personnel, including 60 constables and 14 home guards, participated in the first phase. Experienced forensic experts and senior police officers imparted practical knowledge on securing crime scenes, conducting meticulous inspections, and collecting crucial evidence.

Legal experts such as advocate Shubhrajeet Mohanty highlighted the importance of scientific investigation in reducing case backlogs in courts.

Officials said that conviction rates have already shown improvement compared to previous years, with better coordination between prosecution and police, timely filing of charge sheets, and effective witness management. The introduction of CSOs is expected to further accelerate judicial processes by ensuring that courts receive reliable and uncontaminated evidence.

The initiative reflects Odisha Police’s commitment to adopting advanced knowledge and skills in criminal investigation. By combining forensic science with disciplined policing, authorities hope to reduce delays, enhance public trust, and strengthen the overall justice delivery system.
