Weather Alert / Odisha on Edge as Bay of Bengal Low Pressure Sparks Cyclone Concerns

Key Points
Weather models hint at a low‑pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal by October 23-24, with cyclone fears rising. Odisha’s impact remains uncertain as alerts are issued for southern districts.
Bhubaneswar, Oct 19: Concerns over another cyclone in October have resurfaced as weather models indicate the possibility of a low‑pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal later this month.
Meteorological inputs suggest that a cyclonic circulation currently active over the Gulf of Thailand and adjoining regions may move towards the Andaman Sea around October 20-21.
By October 23-24, this system could evolve into a low‑pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, with further intensification into a depression expected by October 24-25.

✨If conditions remain favourable, forecasters warn that the system may strengthen into a cyclone.
Experts caution that while models point to intensification, the eventual track of the system remains uncertain. It could move towards Tamil Nadu, Myanmar, or Bangladesh, leaving Odisha’s vulnerability unclear at this stage.
“Only after the low‑pressure forms will its intensity and trajectory become clearer,” meteorologists noted.
Meanwhile, the regional weather office has issued a yellow alert for parts of southern Odisha. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in the next 24 hours across Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada districts.
Heavy showers are expected in isolated pockets, particularly in Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam on Tuesday.
Beyond October 25, conditions across Odisha are forecast to turn largely dry, with only cloudy skies in some areas. The prolonged rainfall of recent weeks has left the soil saturated, which is influencing local temperatures.
Authorities are closely monitoring developments in the Bay
of Bengal, as the possibility of a cyclone in October raises concerns for
coastal preparedness. For now, Odisha’s risk remains uncertain, pending further
analysis of the evolving system.
