Bhubaneswar, Apr 9: Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Thursday launched a self-defence training programme for 5,000 women Self Help Group (SHG) members in the presence of Chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW) Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar.
Focus On Safety, Confidence And Empowerment
The programme, being implemented by the Mission Shakti Department in partnership with the National Commission for Women, aims to equip SHG women with self-defence skills and enhance personal safety.
Addressing the gathering, Parida said women’s empowerment must go beyond financial independence.
“This self-defence training programme will equip our SHG women with the strength and skills to move fearlessly, take independent decisions and actively participate in economic activities,” she said.
NCW Stresses Institutional Support
Rahatkar emphasised the need for structured institutional support to strengthen women’s safety and capacity building.
She said the initiative would play a crucial role in making women more self-reliant and confident, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.

Pilot Phase To Cover Five Districts
Officials said the programme will initially cover 5,000 SHG members across five districts -- Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Keonjhar and Ganjam.
The initiative aims to improve women’s mobility, ensure safer participation in market activities, and reinforce the foundation of women-led development in Odisha.
