Mayurbhanj, Nov 27: The police in Mayurbhanj district have intensified their crackdown on the sand mafia following the violent attack on Betanati Tehsildar and his driver. So far, seven accused have been arrested in connection with the incident, while five others remain absconding.

On Monday, police arrested Mehz Hussain alias Muna from Baripada. Two more suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday. Officials confirmed that the total number of arrests has now reached seven.

Meanwhile, in Jagatsinghpur district, the administration carried out a major raid against illegal sand mining at Balipatna Kilipal sand ghat. During the operation, authorities seized 46 heavy trucks (Hywas) and three machines used for sand extraction. A case has been registered at Tirtol police station under the name of Kilipal sand ghat.

The seized vehicles and machinery have been kept at Tirtol Balijatra ground under police supervision. Officials said the crackdown was part of a broader effort to curb illegal sand mining activities that have been rampant in the region, causing environmental damage and revenue loss to the state.

The twin actions in Mayurbhanj and Jagatsinghpur highlight the administration’s growing determination to tackle the sand mafia and illegal mining operations across Odisha. With arrests mounting and machinery seized, authorities are sending a strong message that law enforcement will not tolerate such activities.
